In two sessions, on Wednesday night and early Thursday morning, I stood out by York’s Millennium Bridge and watched and waited patiently and attempted to catch on camera the Perseids. The Millennium Bridge is illuminated come nightfall with lights of shifting colours, but the lights go out around midnight; and despite the pattern of these lights throughout the earlier session, and the constant yellow of the streetlamps, the Perseids came in frequent clusters and were easy to spot.

Less easy, however, to capture. I managed to photograph one meteor, whose trail takes it agonisingly out of shot. Here are twelve pictures of the night and the night’s sky.
