In its own words, the festival aims &#8216;to brighten up the mood of the audience and the participants in the winter darkness&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>In truth by the end of January in Reykjavik the days are already much lighter than they were a month ago, the few minutes of daylight which Icelanders might blink and miss at the winter solstice rapidly expanding to encompass around\u00a0six hours.\u00a0But while Reykjavik is never dull &#8211; especially Harpa, clad in colourful glass, and looking out over the Faxafl\u00f3i bay and towards the mountain range Esjan &#8211; the days remain dark all the same, and with temperatures routinely in the minus, it would be pleasant enough simply to get indoors, yet\u00a0Dark Music Days offers an especially enticing array of artists.<\/p>\n<p>Among those who feature\u00a0this year\u00a0are the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra; the quartet Dans les arbres, who have released two albums on ECM Records and performed alongside the likes of\u00a0Yumiko Tanaka, Otomo Yoshihide, and Jim O\u00b4Rourke; Nordic Affect, who combine strings with electronics for a sound somewhere between 18th century chamber music and 21st century ambient\u00a0experimentation, the ensemble&#8217;s latest record\u00a0<em>Clockworking<\/em> released by Sono Luminus last July; and the violinist\u00a0Hl\u00edf Sigurj\u00f3nsd\u00f3ttir, whose <em>Dialogus<\/em> was named &#8216;CD of the Year 2015&#8217; by Maria Nockin, a critic for <em>Fanfare<\/em>\u00a0music magazine.<\/p>\n<p>The programme covers a span of more than a hundred years &#8211;\u00a0some of the earliest pieces performed during the three days of the festival include Arnold Schoenberg&#8217;s <em>Sechs kleine Klavierst\u00fccke<\/em>, published in 1913, and Claude Debussy&#8217;s <em>\u00c9tudes<\/em>, written in 1915 &#8211; but the emphasis is on new Icelandic composers. Dark Music Days was established back in 1980 by the Society of Icelandic Composers, making it one of the country&#8217;s oldest music festivals.<\/p>\n<header class=\"entry-header\">Harpa persevered through the financial crisis to become Iceland&#8217;s first purpose-built concert hall when it opened on 4 May 2011. The home of the Icelandic Symphony Orchestra, the Icelandic Opera, the Reykjavik Big Band, and various international music festivals, the building&#8217;s design saw it receive the Mies van der Rohe Award in 2013, while it has also been acclaimed by <em>Gramophone<\/em> magazine as one of the best concert halls of the millennium.\u00a0On Saturday Gu\u00f0n\u00fd Einarsd\u00f3ttir will perform\u00a0J\u00f3n Nordal&#8217;s five organ compositions at Reykjavik Cathedral, and later that evening the Vox Feminae women&#8217;s choir will sing on Harpa&#8217;s third floor, but otherwise all of the Dark Music Days\u00a0performances will take place in the venue&#8217;s\u00a0Nor\u00f0urlj\u00f3s, Eldborg, and Kaldal\u00f3n concert halls.<\/header>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>At the height of the Icelandic winter, when the skies still bear little light, the Harpa concert hall in Reykjavik plays host to Dark Music Days, an annual festival of contemporary and new music.
