With no cases of community transmission in New Zealand, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/news\/article.cfm?c_id=1&amp;objectid=12327755\">the director general of health claimed that the virus had been eliminated if not eradicated in the country<\/a>, meaning control over the spread of <strong>COVID-19<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stuff.co.nz\/national\/health\/coronavirus\/121289245\/coronavirus-count-down-to-level-3-with-1-million-kiwis-expected-back-at-work\">as businesses began to reopen and people returned to work<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-52436658\">Neighbouring Australia has also managed to limit the toll of coronavirus<\/a>, and to consolidate their gains <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2020-04-27\/coronavirus-tracing-app-covidsafe-one-million-downloads\/12187806\">both countries<\/a> rolled out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nzherald.co.nz\/nz\/news\/article.cfm?c_id=1&amp;objectid=12327738\">tracing apps<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/nation\/2020\/05\/119_288792.html\">South Korea recorded no new domestic cases for the first time since the middle of February<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.koreatimes.co.kr\/www\/nation\/2020\/05\/119_288913.html\">further eased distancing measures<\/a> amid <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-52518844\">a rare border scuffle with their recalcitrant northern compatriots<\/a>, while zero cases were recorded across consecutive days in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/hong-kong\/health-environment\/article\/3082640\/coronavirus-hong-kong-records-no-new-cases-sunday\">Hong Kong<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smh.com.au\/world\/asia\/vietnam-has-reported-no-new-coronavirus-cases-for-12-days-why-20200427-p54nnb.html\">Vietnam<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It was a different story in other parts of South and Southeast Asia, as cases surged in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/05\/afghanistan-facing-coronavirus-health-disaster-watchdog-200501055154270.html\">Afghanistan<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ndtv.com\/india-news\/india-records-biggest-jump-of-2-293-coronavirus-cases-in-24-hours-total-cases-cross-37-000-mark-1-218-deaths-2221971\">India<\/a>, while <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-indonesia-cases\/indonesia-says-coronavirus-infections-rise-above-10000-idUKKBN22C1FY\">in Indonesia they topped 10,000<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiatoday.in\/india\/story\/covid-19-mha-extends-nationwide-lockdown-by-another-14-days-1673394-2020-05-01\">India extended its lockdown for two weeks while dividing the country into zones for the gradual easing of restrictions<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bangkokpost.com\/thailand\/general\/1908545\/emergency-decree-extended\">Thailand extended its emergency decree<\/a>, retaining a nightly curfew while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/news\/asia\/thailand-covid-19-lockdown-relax-measuress-may-3-12691434\">loosening measures around businesses and recreational activities<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2020\/05\/01\/national\/japan-coronavirus-panel-keep-restrictions\/#.Xsuvu2gzY2x\">Japan prepared to prolong its state of emergency<\/a>, as <a href=\"https:\/\/english.kyodonews.net\/news\/2020\/05\/894c865f411e-japan-preps-for-early-approval-on-remdesivir-for-virus-treatment.html\">cases passed 15,000<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2020\/05\/02\/national\/japan-medical-workers-severe-shortages-protective-gear-survey\/#.XsuveWgzY2x\">health workers faced equipment shortages<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/health\/528-new-coronavirus-cases-taking-tally-in-singapore-to-16169\">while the death tally remained low in Singapore<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/news\/singapore\/covid-19-testing-coronavirus-singapore-migrant-workers-dormitor-12680368\">the country&#8217;s copybook was blotted by continuing outbreaks in foreign worker dorms<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/some-singapore-businesses-to-reopen-from-may-5-as-circuit-breaker-measures-eased\">Circuit-breaker mode in Singapore was extended for another week<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.straitstimes.com\/singapore\/health\/coronavirus-657-new-cases-on-sunday-10-sporeans-and-prs\">cases surpassed 18,000<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/news\/singapore\/covid19-some-businesses-to-resume-from-may-5-12696134\">the country made plans for the resumption of business<\/a>. In the Middle East, <a href=\"https:\/\/english.alarabiya.net\/en\/coronavirus\/2020\/04\/28\/Coronavirus-Cases-in-Saudi-Arabia-surpass-20-000-after-1-266-new-cases-reported-.html\">cases in Saudi Arabia topped 20,000<\/a> and continued to rise in Iran, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-iran\/mosques-and-schools-to-reopen-in-irans-low-risk-areas-idUSKBN22F090\">which nevertheless opted to reopen schools and mosques in low-risk areas<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/israel-news\/government-approves-return-of-grades-1-3-and-11-12-on-sunday-626555\">The Israeli government sought to reopen schools<\/a> but was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timesofisrael.com\/most-schools-wont-open-sunday-as-municipalities-rebel-against-cabinet-decision\/\">rebuffed by the municipalities<\/a>. Lockdowns were eased in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesouthafrican.com\/news\/south-africa-first-day-at-level-4-lockdown-1-may-2020\/\">South Africa<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2020\/04\/nigeria-buhari-unwind-covid-19-lockdown-key-states-200427200057949.html\">Nigeria<\/a>, while the relatively low figure of 480 cases in Tanzania <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theeastafrican.co.ke\/news\/ea\/Tanzania-480-Covid19-cases-is-highest-in-east-africa\/4552908-5537840-f890orz\/index.html\">still made the country the hardest hit in the east of the African subcontinent<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/confirmed-coronavirus-cases-3-million-infected-covid-19-1500351\">Global cases of coronavirus had passed three million at the start of the week<\/a>, as Europe witnessed a cavalcade of reopenings. Schools and businesses began to open up in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.no\/20200427\/norway-opens-first-schools-after-six-week-coronavirus-closure\">Norway<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swissinfo.ch\/eng\/easing-of-lockdown-measures_presenting-switzerland-s-new-look\/45719282\">Switzerland<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/apr\/27\/czech-republic-shops-reopen-as-part-of-gradual-coronavirus-lockdown-exit\">Czech Republic,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.reuters.com\/article\/uk-health-coronavirus-austria\/austrians-let-their-hair-down-as-coronavirus-curbs-are-relaxed-idUKKBN22E0M2\">Austria allowed visits to hairdressers and beauticians<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-52439926\">restrictions were eased in Germany even as face masks became compulsory in public settings<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-lifts-coronavirus-ban-on-religious-services-opens-up-playgrounds\/a-53293936\">By the end of the week Germans were returning to parks and museums<\/a>, and even to church, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/coronavirus-germans-go-back-to-church-but-no-singing-allowed\/a-53316113\">on the strict proviso of no singing<\/a>. Deaths fell markedly, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-italy-tally\/italys-daily-coronavirus-death-toll-jumps-new-cases-stable-idUSKBN22E0N4\">with a few blips<\/a>, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-05-03\/italy-reports-fewest-virus-deaths-since-lockdown-started\">Italy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/society\/2020-05-03\/daily-coronavirus-fatalities-in-spain-fall-to-163-the-lowest-figure-seen-since-march-18.html\">Spain<\/a> which made <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.it\/20200503\/confusion-as-italy-prepares-to-ease-lockdown\">tentative<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-spain\/spain-to-phase-out-coronavirus-lockdown-eyes-normality-by-end-june-idUSKCN22A168\">steps<\/a> as they <a href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/society\/2020-05-02\/spaniards-take-to-the-streets-for-walks-and-exercise-after-48-days-of-confinement.html\">allowed for outdoor activity<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-52524001\">The scenario was similar in France<\/a>, which also saw <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20200503-france-records-lowest-covid-19-daily-death-toll-in-six-weeks\">rapidly declining deaths and hospitalisations<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20200428-live-pm-philippe-unveils-france-s-plan-to-ease-covid-19-lockdown\">prime minister \u00c9douard Philippe outlined his country&#8217;s exit plans<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand deaths remained high in the United Kingdom, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-52493500\">even as prime minister Boris Johnson argued the country had passed the peak of the outbreak<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/apr\/28\/uk-records-4343-care-home-coronavirus-deaths-in-a-fortnight\">The addition of care home figures<\/a> saw the death toll <a href=\"https:\/\/www.standard.co.uk\/news\/uk\/coronavirus-latest-death-toll-uk-hospital-figures-a4427411.html\">jump beyond 26,000 by Wednesday<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-britain-death-toll\/uk-shadows-italy-as-worst-hit-in-europe-virus-death-toll-passes-28000-idUSKBN22E0LD\">as the country approached Italy as the worst hit outside of the United States<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsj.co.uk\/quality-and-performance\/revealed-how-government-changed-the-rules-to-hit-100000-tests-target\/7027544.article\">controversy beset testing targets<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-russia-cases\/russias-coronavirus-cases-surge-past-100000-after-record-daily-rise-idUSKBN22C12L\">Cases stormed past 100,000 in Russia<\/a>, so that by Sunday <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rt.com\/news\/487462-russian-pm-tests-positiv-covid19\/\">an ailing prime minister<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2020\/04\/28\/putin-extends-russias-coronavirus-lockdown-as-new-infections-continue-to-rise-a70130\">the president&#8217;s extended non-working decree<\/a> could not stop <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/05\/03\/europe\/russia-coronavirus-cases-intl\/index.html\">daily infections in excess of 10,000<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-bosnia-cases\/bosnia-reports-sharp-rise-in-coronavirus-cases-after-relaxing-lockdown-idUSKBN22B2DB\">Bosnia reported a sharp rise in cases after relaxing its lockdown measures<\/a>. Belgium, high on the list of deaths per capita, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-52439934\">ordered more frites<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/europe\/20200427-interview-iceland-gaining-control-over-covid-19-pm-tells-france-24\">Iceland said that it was gaining control over the pandemic<\/a>, but Sweden was proving the exception across Scandinavia, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-sweden-cases\/swedens-confirmed-covid-19-cases-rise-above-20000-idUSKBN22B1Q3\">as cases stretched beyond the 20,000 mark<\/a>. During the course of the week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-52459030\">France<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-52513516\">Spain<\/a> elaborated on the reopening of their economies by mandating face masks, while countries remained reluctant to lift limitations on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/health-coronavirus-swiss-easing\/swiss-extend-ban-on-events-exceeding-1000-people-through-august-idUSZ8N2BQ001\">large gatherings<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-extends-worldwide-travel-warning-until-mid-june\/a-53277877\">travel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In the realm of medicine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/apr\/23\/high-hopes-drug-for-covid-19-treatment-failed-in-full-trial#maincontent\">the mixed messages continued for remdesivir<\/a>, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(20)31022-9\/fulltext\">a study in <em>The Lancet<\/em><\/a> following trials in Wuhan <a href=\"https:\/\/eurekalert.org\/pub_releases\/2020-04\/tl-tlf042920.php\">showed no significant benefits from the antiviral drug<\/a>, while in the United States Dr. Anthony Fauci of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases suggested that data from a government trial showed a <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/04\/29\/health\/gilead-sciences-remdesivir-covid-19-treatment\/index.html\">&#8216;clear-cut, significant, positive effect in diminishing the time to recovery&#8217;<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2020\/05\/01\/government-researchers-changed-metric-measure-coronavirus-drug-remdesivir-during-clinical-trial\/\">Despite some qualms over the metrics<\/a>, the Food and Drug Administration subsequently issued <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2020\/05\/01\/health\/remdesivir-fda-authorization\/index.html\">an emergency use authorisation for the treatment<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.co.uk\/article\/uk-coronavirus-vaccine-trial\">Meanwhile an Oxford University laboratory raced ahead in the quest for a vaccine<\/a>. Sport remained up in the air as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.japantimes.co.jp\/news\/2020\/04\/28\/national\/tokyo-olympics-2021-vaccine\/#.XqihDmgzY2w\">doubts were cast over the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics<\/a>, and while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.co.uk\/football\/german-bundesliga\/story\/4090747\/bundesliga-return-delayed-by-german-government\">the return of the Bundesliga was delayed by the German government<\/a>, in France <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skysports.com\/football\/news\/11820\/11981197\/paris-saint-germain-crowned-ligue-1-champions-after-french-season-called-off\">Paris Saint-Germain were awarded the Ligue 1 title after the remainder of the season was cancelled<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.billboard.com\/articles\/news\/festivals\/9368186\/newport-folk-jazz-festivals-canceled-2020\">The 2020 Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals also fell by the wayside<\/a>. No worries on the entertainment front however, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icelandreview.com\/news\/netflix-continues-production-in-iceland-crediting-strong-covid-response\/\">as Netflix persevered with production in Iceland<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The financial impact of coronavirus continued to be felt, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/04\/29\/us-gdp-q1-2020-first-reading.html\">the United States economy shrank by 4.8 percent in the first quarter<\/a>, the worst contraction since the global crisis twelve years ago. Meanwhile <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/04\/30\/us-weekly-jobless-claims.html\">3.84 million jobless claims took the tally over the past six weeks beyond 30 million<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/04\/30\/euro-zone-gdp-q1-2020.html\">The eurozone witnessed an overall contraction of 3.8 percent<\/a> as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2020\/04\/30\/coronavirus-downturn-france-and-italy-in-recession-as-spain-sees-record-gdp-decline\">France and Italy entered recession<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2020-04-28\/australia-economy-news-deepest-downturn-in-90-years-is-coming\">even countries which had fairly weathered the storm faced unprecedented economic downturns<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/04\/27\/oil-news-crude-wti-brent-prices-today.html\">Oil prices continued to sputter<\/a>. But for all that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/04\/30\/stocks-are-headed-for-their-best-month-in-decades-yet-most-of-wall-street-hates-this-rally.html\">the stock market reported its best month in decades<\/a>, proving the adage that Wall Street may not incline towards Main Street&#8217;s best interests.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/china\/politics\/article\/3082031\/china-signals-coronavirus-under-control-resumption-parliament\">China scheduled the annual meeting of its National People&#8217;s Congress for 22 May<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/04\/30\/climate\/global-emissions-decline.html\">The International Energy Agency indicated that global emissions would drop in the region of eight percent this year<\/a> as COVID-19 stifles commercial activity. There was renewed focus on the spread of coronavirus in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2020\/04\/28\/trump-meat-plants-dpa\/\">meatpacking plants<\/a> and prisons, from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/2020\/4\/22\/21228146\/coronavirus-pandemic-jails-prisons-epicenters\">United States<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/world-nation\/story\/2020-04-28\/virus-spreads-fear-through-latin-americas-unruly-prisons\">Latin America,<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.channelnewsasia.com\/news\/asia\/covid-19-hits-philippine-jails-prisoners-freed-12696704\">the Philippines<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-52449920\">the United Kingdom<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.themoscowtimes.com\/2020\/04\/27\/inside-russias-secretive-prisons-as-coronavirus-takes-hold-a70108\">Russia<\/a>. And on Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/gallery\/2020\/may\/01\/may-day-workers-confronting-coronavirus-around-the-world-in-pictures\">May Day was celebrated across the globe<\/a>, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/news\/hong-kong\/law-and-crime\/article\/3082385\/hong-kong-police-ready-respond-force-any-labour-day\">against crackdowns<\/a> labour protesters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-health-coronavirus-greece-mayday\/using-plastic-markers-greek-workers-defy-ban-to-mark-labour-day-idUSKBN22D50X\">paid heed to distancing measures<\/a>, while the annual worker&#8217;s day was given added succour by <a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/changing-america\/respect\/poverty\/495577-tens-of-thousands-expected-to-partake-in-rent-strikes-friday\">rent strikes in America<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2020\/apr\/30\/chinese-hit-road-again-first-national-holiday-since-lockdown\">China hit the road as residents embarked on their first national holiday since the end of lockdown<\/a>.
