On the other hand even the return of Rafael Nadal, Simona Halep, and Elina Svitolina, who skipped New York for health reasons, could not mask the lack of frivolity in autumnal France. Then on Wednesday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/30006802\/serena-williams-withdraws-french-open-achilles-injury\">Serena Williams withdrew from her second-round match citing an Achilles injury<\/a>, taking with her one of the tournament&#8217;s major talking points <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/30007051\/serena-williams-latest-quest-24-ends-french-open-does-really-matter\">as she strives to tie up Margaret Court<\/a> on twenty-four Grand Slams.<\/p>\n<p>Other seeds fell by the wayside, notably number two Karol\u00edna Pl\u00ed\u0161kov\u00e1 and number four Daniil Medvedev. But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtatennis.com\/news\/1849657\/ostapenko-overwhelms-pliskova-in-french-open-upset\">Pl\u00ed\u0161kov\u00e1 lost out to Je\u013cena Ostapenko<\/a>, French Open champion in 2017 when Pl\u00ed\u0161kov\u00e1 reached the semi-finals, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com\/pro-game\/2020\/09\/marton-fucsovics-daniil-medvedev-roland-garros-2020-french-open\/91049\/\">Medvedev<\/a> has never reached beyond the first round at Roland Garros.<\/p>\n<p>The likely contenders &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/29976785\/rafael-nadal-confident-heading-most-trying-french-open-yet\">Nadal looking for an unprecedented thirteenth French Open title<\/a>, world number one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2020\/sep\/29\/novak-djokovic-resumes-his-winning-ways-in-french-open-cruise\">Novak Djokovic<\/a> seeking to close the Grand Slam gap, victor in 2018 Simona Halep, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20201002-2018-winner-halep-and-two-time-runner-up-thiem-advance-into-last-16-at-french-open\">Dominic Thiem<\/a>, the newly-crowned US Open champion who has twice finished runner-up in France &#8211; progressed flawlessly. Home favourite <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tennis.com\/pro-game\/2020\/09\/roland-garros-notebook-passport-day-2-nadal-serena-thiem-kvitova-muguruza-monfils\/91020\/\">Ga\u00ebl Monfils<\/a> and US Open finalist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tennisnow.com\/News\/2020\/September\/Schmiedlova-Stuns-Azarenka-at-Roland-Garros.aspx\">Victoria Azarenka<\/a> went out.<\/p>\n<p>Then on Friday the clouds lifted and Court Philippe Chatrier, still limited to just 1,000 spectators, seemed to grow in magnitude as the volume turned up a notch. The French Open picked up the pace over the weekend, as Italian newcomer Jannik Sinner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/10\/04\/sports\/tennis\/french-open-alexander-zverev.html\">blasted past a sickly Alexander Zverev<\/a>, while the talented Polish teenager Iga \u015awi\u0105tek <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtatennis.com\/news\/1854301\/halep-after-swiatek-loss-she-played-unbelievable-today\">saw off the top-seeded Halep in straight sets<\/a>. Danielle Collins <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-tennis-frenchopen-collins\/collins-knocks-out-former-champion-muguruza-to-reach-last-16-idUSKBN26O0ZV\">battled past former champion Garbi\u00f1e Muguruza<\/a>, and French wild card Hugo Gaston <a href=\"https:\/\/www.essentiallysports.com\/tennis-news-atp-his-drop-shots-are-just-from-another-planet-dominic-thiem-survives-five-set-thriller-against-hugo-gaston-at-french-open-2020\/\">gave Thiem a scare<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Halep and Muguruza were the last women in the draw with French Open final experience. As a first-time champion, her victory in France was remarkably dominant, as over the course of two weeks <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wtatennis.com\/news\/1859725\/swiatek-seals-kenin-surges-to-maiden-major-title-in-paris\">she failed to lose a single set or more than five games per match<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/tennis\/story\/_\/id\/30055150\/after-five-hours-diego-schwartzman-gets-dominic-thiem-semis\">When Dominic Thiem bowed out in the quarter-finals versus Diego Schwartzman<\/a>, it seemed that nothing would stop a third French Open final meeting between world number one Novak Djokovic and world number two Rafa Nadal. Thiem, runner-up for the past two years in Paris, eventually succumbed to Schwartzman at the end of five hours and five sets, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/news\/thiem-roland-garros-2020-qf-reaction\">citing fatigue following his successful travails at the US Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nadal, in a galaxy of his own as he chased his thirteenth French Open title, saw off the challenge of spunky Italian youngster Jannik Sinner in the quarters, and maintained the upper hand against Schwartzman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20201009-nadal-reaches-13th-french-open-final-will-vie-to-tie-federer-s-grand-slam-record\">through straight sets<\/a>. Stefanos Tsitsipas promised a sterner test for Djokovic in the other semi-final, after running through Grigor Dimitrov and Andrey Rublev. Victorious at last year&#8217;s ATP Finals, a semi-final appearance for Tsitsipas matched his best ever showing at a Grand Slam, and he proved his mettle after stumbling in the early going, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/news\/tsitsipas-roland-garros-2020-sf-reaction\">though it was Djokovic who turned on the burners in the decisive fifth set<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nadal seemed to have overcome <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/2020\/sep\/25\/french-open-organisers-regret-spectator-limit-at-roland-garros\">the early complaints of slow balls and chilly temperatures<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20201005-conditions-at-roland-garros-favour-djokovic-says-toni-nadal\">even from within his own camp<\/a> there were concerns that <a href=\"https:\/\/tennishead.net\/rafael-nadal-has-no-chance-against-novak-djokovic-in-these-conditions-says-serbs-coach\/\">the heavy conditions<\/a> would hinder his usual clay court kick. No worries, for in a surprisingly lopsided final, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/20201011-nadal-beats-djokovic-to-win-his-13th-french-open-ties-federer-with-20th-grand-slam-title\">it was Nadal who prevailed 6-0, 6-2, 7-5<\/a>. An implausible thirteenth title at Roland Garros also saw Nadal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.atptour.com\/en\/news\/nadal-federer-20-grand-slam-titles\">join Roger Federer on twenty Grand Slams<\/a>, a lofty but perilous precipice.
