Once described by Jean-Paul Sartre as carrying <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2020\/sep\/24\/juliette-greco-obituary\">&#8216;a million poems in her voice&#8217;<\/a>, the tributes were led by French president Emmanuel Macron, who wrote that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/EmmanuelMacron\/status\/1308846965187371017\">&#8216;The muse of Saint-Germain-des-Pr\u00e9s is immortal&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Montpellier and raised by her maternal grandparents in Bordeaux, Gr\u00e9co trained as a ballerina at the Op\u00e9ra Garnier in Paris prior to the outbreak of the Second World War. Tied to the Resistance, <a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/147597\/spirit-left-bank\">she was arrested by the Gestapo while her mother and older sister were deported to Ravensbr\u00fcck concentration camp<\/a>, liberated by the Red Army as the war drew to a close.<\/p>\n<p>Gr\u00e9co became a familiar face in the caf\u00e9s and clubs of postwar Paris, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newstatesman.com\/culture\/books\/2018\/05\/how-postwar-paris-became-intellectual-capital-world\">a thriving cultural milieu shaped by the existentialism of Sartre, Albert Camus, and Simone de Beauvoir<\/a>, styled in slender black to a soundtrack of smoky jazz. The Left Bank served as a haven for artists as diverse as Samuel Beckett, Pablo Picasso, and James Baldwin, while Gr\u00e9co would enter into long-term relationships <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2006\/may\/25\/jazz\">with Miles Davis<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1979\/12\/24\/archives\/darryl-f-zanuck-flamboyant-film-producer-dead-knew-the-uses-of.html\">the film producer Darryl F. Zanuck<\/a>. At clubs like Le Tabou and La Rose Rouge she made the acquaintance of Jean Cocteau, making her major motion picture debut with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.criterion.com\/films\/610-orpheus\"><em>Orpheus<\/em><\/a> in 1950.<\/p>\n<p>At the same time Gr\u00e9co took to the stage, performing at the reopening of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Le_Boeuf_sur_le_Toit_(cabaret)\">the renowned cabaret Le B\u0153uf sur le toit<\/a>. To lyrics by Sartre, Raymond Queneau, and Jacques Pr\u00e9vert and the compositions of Joseph Kosma, she became a celebrated songstress, scoring success with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Lfhu6_KQkZQ\">&#8216;Si tu t&#8217;imagines&#8217;<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-dvzcdnFOo4\">&#8216;Je suis comme je suis&#8217;<\/a> then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2ZdJnyOw73k\">&#8216;Les feuilles mortes&#8217;<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=oieG0DHfISE\">&#8216;Sous le ciel de Paris&#8217;<\/a>, which became standards.<\/p>\n<p>Starring roles in films by Jean-Pierre Melville and Jean Renoir were followed by parts in Hollywood pictures and British-American productions. Sought out by Mel Ferrer, it was on the set of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0051028\/\"><em>The Sun Also Rises<\/em><\/a> that she first met Zanuck, and she played in <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/1957\/film\/reviews\/the-roots-of-heaven-1200418983\/\"><em>The Roots of Heaven<\/em><\/a> by John Huston and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/film\/2013\/aug\/26\/otto-preminger-bonjour-tristesse-john-patterson\"><em>Bonjour Tristesse<\/em><\/a> by Otto Preminger, before starring alongside Orson Welles in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1960\/05\/20\/archives\/crack-in-the-mirror-courtroom-drama.html\"><em>Crack in the Mirror<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Performances at the Olympia in Paris and on tours to the United States and Brazil had made Gr\u00e9co the face of the chanson. From the late 50s, under the auspices of the composer Andr\u00e9 Popp, she recorded classic renditions of songs by Jacques Brel, L\u00e9o Ferr\u00e9, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lesinrocks.com\/2020\/09\/25\/musique\/musique\/quand-juliette-greco-interviewait-serge-gainsbourg-en-1959\/\">a young Serge Gainsbourg<\/a>. Between continuing forays on television and film, she had hits with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=GEpaVG3As-c\">&#8216;La Javanaise&#8217;<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-u02lMspv_0\">&#8216;D\u00e9shabillez-moi&#8217;<\/a> and won critical acclaim for the albums <em>Gr\u00e9co chante Mac Orlan<\/em>\u00a0and <em>La Femme<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1970s, Gr\u00e9co embarked on a series of world tours, switched record labels at the end of a long partnership with Philips, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Juliette-Gr%C3%A9co-Gr%C3%A9co-Chante-Jacques-Brel-Henri-Gougaud-Pierre-Seghers\/release\/11612474\">tried her hand at songwriting<\/a>. Sporadic recordings in the 80s and 90s were followed by a fully-fledged comeback and a series of albums in the 2000s. In 2012, Gr\u00e9co celebrated with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allmusic.com\/album\/%C3a-se-traverse-et-cest-beau-mw0002298894\">a new record<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.arte.tv\/sites\/presse\/meldungen-dossiers\/die-grande-dame-des-franzoesischen-chansons-hommage-an-juliette-greco\/\">television specials in France<\/a> on the occasion of her 85th birthday. She was promoted to commandeur of the L\u00e9gion d&#8217;honneur.<\/p>\n<p>A source of inspiration for philosophers, fellow artists, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lefigaro.fr\/musique\/ne-vous-deplaise-serge-gainsbourg-a-ecrit-la-javanaise-pour-juliette-greco-20200924\">the songwriters who wrote songs in her name<\/a>, framed against the shadows of the stage with her long dark hair and black attire, Gr\u00e9co maintained a spare approach to her craft, reciting the title of each song and performing with poetic flair and a husky voice out of the stillness.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015 she spanned the globe, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-44230634\">conducting a &#8216;Merci&#8217; farewell tour<\/a>. The following year she suffered a stroke and the death of her daughter.
