The record stands at a midpoint between her early sixties-infused folk stylings, which often featured and sometimes figured Crosby, Stills &amp; Nash, and the freeform jazz experiments which would eventually see her collaborate with the likes of Jaco Pastorius, Charles Mingus, and Herbie Hancock.<\/p>\n<p>Less ornate than <em>Ladies of the Canyon<\/em>, less austere than <em>For the Roses<\/em>, on <em>Blue<\/em> Joni Mitchell found her footing at some remove from the madding crowd. She had taken a break from performing and travelled across Europe, with Paris stirring up reflections on her adopted hometown of California, while in Crete and the Balearic Islands she contemplated her frictious relationships with James Taylor and Graham Nash.<\/p>\n<p>Over intricately plucked Appalachian dulcimer and roiling piano, her voice already beginning to age like fine wine, sounding rich and full and deep, Mitchell relayed personal anecdotes covering her adventures among the cave-dwelling hippies of Matala, pored over her relationships with a prescient sense of absence and loss, and with one of her most cryptic yet intimate lyrics summoned the spirit of the daughter she had given up for adoption.<\/p>\n<p>Critically acclaimed upon its release in the summer of 1971, today <em>Blue<\/em> is routinely listed among the greatest albums of all time. In 2000, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2000\/01\/03\/arts\/critics-choices-albums-as-mileposts-in-a-musical-century.html?scp=1&amp;sq=Joni%20Mitchell%20Blue%20Beatles%20Revolver&amp;st=cse\"><em>The New York Times<\/em> selected <em>Blue<\/em><\/a> as one of the 25 albums which represented &#8216;turning points and pinnacles in 20th-century popular music&#8217;, and in 2017, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2017\/07\/24\/538307314\/turning-the-tables-150-greatest-albums-made-by-women-page-15\"><em>Blue<\/em> was chosen by National Public Radio<\/a> as the greatest album ever recorded by a woman.<\/p>\n<p>Now the fiftieth anniversary of the record has brought fresh tributes: from long-form pieces on the musical accomplishment of the album, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/06\/20\/1008271419\/joni-mitchell-masterpiece-at-50-her-kind-of-blue\">likening its structure to <em>Kind of Blue<\/em> by the jazz icon Miles Davis<\/a>, to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2021-06-21\/joni-mitchell-blue-50-years-review\">reviews<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2021\/06\/20\/arts\/music\/joni-mitchell-blue.html\">appreciations from some of Mitchell&#8217;s fellow artists<\/a>, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/culture\/2021\/jun\/22\/joni-mitchell-blue-my-favourite-song-james-taylor-carole-king-graham-nash-david-crosby-kt-tunstall-birdy\">David Crosby, James Taylor, and Graham Nash<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Joni even opened up on the state of her singing voice and discussed the enduring legacy of the album, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/music\/story\/2021-06-20\/joni-mitchell-cameron-crowe-50th-anniversary-blue\">in a rare new interview for the <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em> with the film director Cameron Crowe<\/a>. And on Wednesday she thanked her fans for all of the positive attention <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/jonimitchell\/\">in a short clip posted via Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/joni-mitchell-blue-ep-anniversary-box-set-1184034\/\">The fiftieth anniversary of <em>Blue<\/em> arrives alongside a new extended play<\/a>, which features the late outtake &#8216;Hunter&#8217; plus alternates and demo versions of &#8216;River&#8217;, &#8216;Urge for Going&#8217;, &#8216;California&#8217;, and &#8216;A Case of You&#8217;.
