Claiming the People&#8217;s Choice Award in a year which mostly made do with online streaming, <a href=\"https:\/\/tiff.net\/events\/nomadland\">Chlo\u00e9 Zhao and Frances McDormand&#8217;s itinerant journey through the American Midwest<\/a> is leading the running in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/entertainment-arts-54232798\">early Oscars contention<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>One Night in Miami<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/hollywood\/2020\/09\/toronto-international-film-festival-wrapup\">the directorial debut of Regina King<\/a>, finished runner-up in Toronto. A fictionalised account of a real-life meeting between <span style=\"font-size: inherit; font-family: Arial, 'Helvetica sans-serif';\">Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, soul singer Sam Cooke, and star running back Jim Brown on the night of Clay&#8217;s world title victory over Sonny Liston, the film is <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/film\/markets-festivals\/kemp-powers-one-night-in-miami-1234760443\/\">adapted from the stage play by Kemp Powers<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/culturedarm.com\/staging\/5793\/cultureteca-13-09-20\/\">made King the first female African-American director in the history of the Venice Film Festival<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nowtoronto.com\/tiff-2020\/review-inconvenient-indian\"><em>Inconvenient Indian<\/em><\/a>, a history of the indigenous peoples of Canada by Michelle Latimer, won the documentary award, while the Georgian-French drama <em>Beginning<\/em> by D\u00e9a Kulumbegashvili won a single FIPRESCI Prize, voted on by international critics.<\/p>\n<p>That marked the start of a big week for Kulumbegashvili, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indiewire.com\/2020\/09\/san-sebastian-film-festival-award-winners-2020-1234589052\/\"><em>Beginning<\/em> also triumphed at the 68th San Sebasti\u00e1n Film Festival<\/a>, which concluded on Saturday. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/beginning-film-review-san-sebastian-2020\">psychological portrait of extremism<\/a> within a community of Jehovah&#8217;s Witnesses picked up Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Actress as well as the Golden Shell for Best Film.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile critics kept their antennas tuned to the Big Apple, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.filmlinc.org\/nyff2020\/\">the New York Film Festival<\/a> will run over the course of the next two weeks.
