Which is to say that the Canadian family comedy <em>Schitt&#8217;s Creek<\/em> seemed sublime then ridiculous as the assorted cast, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/tv\/story\/2020-09-20\/emmys-2020-where-is-the-schitts-creek-cast\">socially distanced at an event space in Toronto<\/a>, opened the show by swallowing up all the comedy awards.<\/p>\n<p>Casting a covetous glance, Emmy and <em>Schitt&#8217;s Creek<\/em> only had eyes for each other as the small-town sitcom swept the comedy circuit. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/race\/emmys-schitts-creek-sets-record-for-most-wins-in-a-single-season-for-a-comedy\">Showrunner Dan Levy became the first person to win in all four major disciplines<\/a>, clasping the awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series, and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series alongside Andrew Cividino, while heading up the cast and crew as the show was named Outstanding Comedy Series for 2020.<\/p>\n<p>Eugene Levy, Catherine O&#8217;Hara, and Annie Murphy in the remaining acting categories completed the set. There was more diversity in the genres of drama and limited series, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2020\/09\/emmy-winners-hbo-schitts-creek-watchmen-succession-1234580905\/\">where <em>Succession<\/em> and <em>Watchmen<\/em> heralded a fine night for HBO<\/a>, claiming the top prizes while picking up four awards apiece. Regina King (<em>Watchmen<\/em>) and Mark Ruffalo (<em>I Know This Much Is True<\/em>) took home the lead acting awards for their respective limited series, leaving Zendaya (<em>Euphoria<\/em>) and Jeremy Strong (<em>Succession<\/em>) as their dramatic counterparts.<\/p>\n<p>Billy Crudup (<em>The Morning Show<\/em>), Julia Garner (<em>Ozark<\/em>), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (<em>Watchmen<\/em>), and Uzo Aduba (<em>Mrs. America<\/em>) triumphed for their supporting roles. Andrij Parekh won Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series for the &#8216;Hunting&#8217; episode of <em>Succession<\/em>, while Maria Schrader won Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series for the German-American drama <em>Unorthodox<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2020\/tv\/features\/unorthdox-shira-haas-yiddish-hassidic-judaism-contemporary-german-culture-netflix-audiences-1203543816\/\">the first Netflix series primarily in Yiddish<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Jimmy Kimmel returned to host the 72nd Primetime Emmy Awards, in front of a crowd of cardboard cutouts with Jason Bateman crashing the set. Jennifer Aniston was on hand to put out fires <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/news\/emmys-7-most-memorable-moments\">before racing home for a partial <em>Friends<\/em> reunion<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/celebrity\/red-carpet-dresses\/a34089898\/tracee-ellis-ross-emmys-2020\/\">Tracee Ellis Ross provided some Hollywood glamour<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=H2vCAjImJJ0\">Anthony Anderson bemoaned the fact that a big year for Black nominees coincided with a coronavirus-induced shutout<\/a>.
