Fresh from feral lands, this week Laura Cannell takes flight on an album which figures the antiphonal call and response of birdsong. Soaring out over the marshes, furrowed fields, and scattered treetops of the fen valley, the composer arms herself with bass, tenor, alto, and double recorders as chordal drones and oscillating tones conjure a minimal chamber music. Meanwhile Moor Mother and the director Ghazal Majidi combine to visualise ‘Temporal Control Of Light Echoes’, most apt as Black Quantum Futurism prepare to mark daylight savings and the advancement of clocks through a searching critique of Westernised time constructs.<\/p>\n

Politics hangs heavily in the air as The Dark Outside and Music From Memory release compilations whose proceeds go towards the humanitarian crisis in Ukraine. The Finnish veterans <\/span>Juha M\u00e4ki-Patola and Tapani Rinne offer a Nordic take on ambient jazz, while guided by the paradox of an anxious mind the sound designer Atte Elias Kantonen bubbles and boils for the Slovakian label Mappa Editions. After a year without internet, for Gabriel Kahane foreclosures and Ponzi schemes still cloud the American dream, Good Looks seek solace in fireworks and crawfish, and Jenny Hval sings of a wounded freedom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Susanna and Stina Stjern revel in the florid language and unfathomable depths of Charles Baudelaire. On piano, tenor saxophone, wind synthesizers and other electronics the duo of Lynn Avery and Cole Pulice explore the sonic margins while eliciting celestial comforts. K. Freund uses acoustic instrumentation to space out the tactile and handmade, Lia Kohl makes a light waltz out of lapping and languorous layers of woozy cello, Lila Tirando a Violeta and Nicola Cruz twist the sinews of the club, and tracks by Padna, Jessica Pavone, and Hinako Omori also feature in the latest roundup of new music.<\/span><\/p>\n
