The album had been recorded over the course of one month the previous February, at Sweet Tea Recording Studio, the 24-track studio with a large control room in Oxford, Mississippi. For the record the band\u00a0sought out producer Ben Allen, desiring his low-end expertise, and valuing both his background in hip-hop \u2013 in the late 1990s he worked on tracks by Bad Boy artists including The Notorious B.I.G., Diddy, and Mase \u2013 and his eclectic taste.<\/p>\n<p>With the band\u2019s prominent guitarist, Deakin (Josh Dibb), sitting the album out, Avey Tare (Dave Portner), Panda Bear (Noah Lennox), and Geologist (Brian Weitz) took the opportunity to prioritise electronics, creating a sample-based record that drew in part from Panda Bear\u2019s 2007 solo release <em>Person Pitch<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.soundonsound.com\/sos\/may09\/articles\/animal.htm\">During the recording process, Animal Collective\u00a0set up two QSC PA speakers at the back of the\u00a0studio<\/a> \u2013 the resulting noise contributing to their entertainment, more than it accurately represented the acoustics of live performance. The samples which they had compiled were triggered live rather than sequenced, as the band endeavoured to maintain their characteristic loose warmth and spontaneity. The Roland SP404 and SP555 samplers were preferred, while the band continued to use their favourite Roland SH2 and Juno-60 analogue synthesizers. Weitz noted, \u2018The Juno we use primarily for mid\u2011range or high\u2011end melodic lines, and the SH2 we use more for the bass sounds\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>After several months listening over the recordings, the album was mixed by the band and Allen at Chase Park Transduction in Athens, Georgia \u2013 a studio familiar to Allen, based\u00a0round\u00a0a\u00a0Sony MXP3036 console. The three active members of Animal Collective suggested that, from start to finish, the procedure which led to\u00a0<em>Merriweather Post Pavilion<\/em>\u00a0was one of the happiest, most trouble-free of their careers.<\/p>\n<p>The last time Portner, Lennox, and Weitz recorded as a trio had been back in 2001: on <em>Danse Manatee<\/em>, the band\u2019s second and Geologist\u2019s first record as\u00a0Animal Collective, and one he frequently cites as his favourite. <a href=\"http:\/\/altmusic.about.com\/od\/interviews\/a\/animalcollectiv.htm\">Portner remarked on the similarity between <em>Merriweather Post Pavilion<\/em> and <em>Danse Manatee<\/em><\/a>, saying \u2018They feel a lot more closely-related to us than I think anybody would really pick up on.\u00a0There were definitely times where we said, \u201care we making <i>Danse Manatee<\/i> part two?\u201d.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p>Until the release of <em>Merriweather Post Pavilion<\/em>, Animal Collective typically used their live shows to debut and develop new material: a practise inspired by Pavement, which had persevered\u00a0despite the band\u2019s members moving apart, and exchanging ideas worked up individually provisionally via email. What became the fourth track on the album, \u2018Summertime Clothes\u2019, was originally know as \u2018Bearhug\u2019. Under this name, with different lyrics and higher-pitched\u00a0vocals from Portner, the song appeared during 2007:<\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"HZco0s21MIQ\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Animal Collective - Bearhug (live Vancouver 9\/15\/07)\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/HZco0s21MIQ?feature=oembed&enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>\u2018Summertime Clothes\u2019 sits on <em>Merriweather Post Pavilion<\/em> as an upbeat, propulsive pop song between \u2018Also Frightened\u2019 and \u2018Daily Routine\u2019. These are two of the record\u2019s densest, least immediate compositions, earthy and strangely languid; \u2018Daily Routine\u2019 has also been described by the band as their \u2018most hip hop\u2019 piece.<\/p>\n<p>All three songs open to\u00a0the sound of water. Portner has discussed the use of acoustic sounds and field recordings on the record, as the band strived for a more \u2018natural and environmental\u2019 sound than that presented on their previous work, 2007\u2019s <em>Strawberry Jam<\/em>. And amidst the back-and-forth correspondence between he and Weitz in the United States and Lennox in Lisbon, Portner has depicted one emergent facet of <em>Merriweather Post Pavilion<\/em>: \u2018We started talking about watery sounds, and how we wanted to have a \u2018shallow lagoon\u2019 feel over the whole record\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The alternately submerging\u00a0and restorative effects of water, immersed within the album\u2019s sound palette, are also a theme of the lyrics to \u2018Summertime Clothes\u2019. A sleepless summer night, with forehead leaking\u00a0and the bed a pool of sweat, is alleviated as Portner sings of soaking his head in the sink. And as he\u00a0and his willing subject await the coming dawn,\u00a0not only the feel but \u2018the sound of the rain\u2019 is desired, wetting the brain and affording respite.<\/p>\n<p>On the structure of \u2018Summertime Clothes\u2019, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.voxpopmag.com\/tout-musique\/154-animal-collective-merriweather-post-paviliontrack-by-track\/\">in\u00a0a 2009 interview with the now-defunct French magazine VoxPop<\/a>, Portner and Weitz commented:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u2018Portner: The melody of this song came suddenly, while we were rehearsing at my house. It\u2019s so simple and we immediately loved it. I tried to find an additional melody, much more dark and weird, but nobody liked it!\u00a0In general, I write\u00a0the most \u2018complex\u2019 songs in Animal Collective, with structures A \/ B \/ C \/ D \/ E\u2026 but I wanted to keep the almost naive simplicity of this song. This is what suits it, and it\u2019s not as if the first songs of the album were very simple: \u2018My Girls\u2019 has a lot of different parts, \u2018Also Frightened\u2019 I won\u2019t talk about\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Weitz: What\u2019s important is to assess what the song needs. In this case, \u2018Summertime Clothes\u2019 required simple and spontaneous arrangements, quick and self-evident things.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The one area on which the band and their producer markedly differed concerned the level of the vocals on <em>Merriweather Post Pavilion<\/em>. Ben Allen tended to want them high in the mix, while the band preferred them lower and blended with other sounds. This difference of opinion was most pronounced when it came to \u2018Summertime Clothes\u2019, as Weitz explained to\u00a0<em>Sound on Sound<\/em>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>\u2018To Ben the vocal melody and the lyrics are the core of the song, along with the rhythm. We have a\u00a0different view. We like everything to blend together. Even if we want everything to be defined, we want it to all have a\u00a0lot of presence and personality. To us it\u2019s more about a\u00a0psychedelic sonic listening experience than just a\u00a0straight pop listening experience. So there was that discussion.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"bodyi\" style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>Pretty early on in the mixing we realised we were gonna have to find the middle ground, so we would do three mixes, where the vocals would be where we wanted them to be, then one louder where Ben wanted them to be and then one even lower than where we wanted them to be, just in case we changed our mind. It was very, very rare that we went with the loud vocal version. \u2018Summertime Clothes\u2019 is the biggest example of where we disagreed. Even after we finished the record we were still thinking maybe the vocals are too loud on that song. It came accompanied with three remixes of the song, by\u00a0D\u00e2m-Funk, Leon Day, and Zomby. The song\u2019s video was directed by Danny Perez, who had previously directed \u2018Who Could Win a Rabbit\u2019 from <em>Sung Tongs<\/em> back in 2004. Perez would go on to collaborate with the band on <em>ODDSAC<\/em>, a visual album full of psychedelic images, comprising 13 tracks over 53 minutes, and released by Animal Collective in 2010.<\/p>\n<p>The single\u2019s cover art displays a vividly coloured still life, replete with sliced citrus fruits,\u00a0flowers, fabrics, and feathers, a putty crab-like creature with stick-on eyes,\u00a0asparagus stalks, and a Delft vase.
