Although both of his parents taught Japanese literature, compelled\u00a0by life in the cosmopolitan port city, his interests leaned\u00a0towards forms which developed outside of Japan, including Hollywood cinema and jazz music: before turning to writing at the age of twenty-nine, Murakami ran a jazz club in Tokyo, called Peter Cat.<\/p>\n<p>His first novel, <em>Hear the Wind Sing<\/em>, was published in 1979, and <em>Norwegian Wood<\/em>, published in 1987, made him a literary superstar at home, hastening his move to the United States. Many of his works draw from classical and popular music, while his literary influences range from Fyodor Dostoevsky and Franz Kafka to Raymond Chandler and Kurt Vonnegut. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theparisreview.org\/interviews\/2\/the-art-of-fiction-no-182-haruki-murakami\">In a <em>Paris Review<\/em> interview from 2004<\/a>, Murakami said of the start of his writing career:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8216;I didn\u2019t know how to write in Japanese &#8211; I\u2019d read almost nothing of the works of Japanese writers &#8211; so I borrowed the style, structure, everything, from the books I had read &#8211; American books or Western books. As a result, I made my own original style. So it was a beginning.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9969\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/culturedarm.com\/staging\/5793\/wp-content\/uploads\/Murakami-Peter-Cat.jpg?resize=696%2C522&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"Murakami Peter Cat\" width=\"696\" height=\"522\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/culturedarm.com\/staging\/5793\/wp-content\/uploads\/Murakami-Peter-Cat.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/culturedarm.com\/staging\/5793\/wp-content\/uploads\/Murakami-Peter-Cat.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/culturedarm.com\/staging\/5793\/wp-content\/uploads\/Murakami-Peter-Cat.jpg?resize=370%2C278&amp;ssl=1 370w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 696px) 100vw, 696px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The <em>Kobe Shimbun<\/em>\u00a0managed to obtain library records under Murakami&#8217;s name\u00a0from his time in\u00a0high school.\u00a0They show that as a schoolboy, he loaned the three-volume complete works of the French writer Joseph Kessel, best known for <em>Belle de Jour,<\/em> the 1928 novel about a young woman who works as a prostitute each afternoon before\u00a0reverting each evening to the role of housewife. <em>Belle de Jour<\/em>\u00a0was adapted into a film in 1967, directed by Luis Bunuel and starring Catherine Deneuve.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This revelation of some of Murakami&#8217;s youthful borrowing habits has received criticism from the Japan Library Association, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.japantoday.com\/category\/arts-culture\/view\/librarians-cry-foul-over-leaked-murakami-reading-list\">who have accused the <em>Kobe Shimbun<\/em> of a violation of the author&#8217;s privacy<\/a>. Most states in Japan possess\u00a0laws protecting the privacy of library users. But defending his newspaper, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2015\/dec\/02\/librarians-in-uproar-after-borrowing-record-of-haruki-murakami-is-leaked\">Hideaki Ono, the assistant managing editor of the <em>Kobe Shimbun<\/em>, said<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8216;Murakami is someone whose work, and the way he developed his literature, is the subject of scholarly study. He is known to have profound knowledge of British and American literature. But [the cards] showed he also explored French literature in his younger days. Since it was identified in 1984, 36 million people have died of HIV\/AIDS, while 35 million people today are estimated to have the condition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">World AIDS Day was established in 1988, the concept of James Bunn and Thomas Netter, two public information officers for the Global Programme on AIDs (since 1996 UNAIDS) at the World Health Organization. World AIDS Day is one of eight official global public health campaigns marked by WHO, along with World Tuberculosis Day (24 March), World Health Day (7 April), World Immunization Week (last week of April), World Malaria Day (25 April), World No Tobacco Day (31 May), World Blood Donor Day (14 June), and World Hepatitis Day (28 July).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Every World AIDS Day has a theme. This year it was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldaidsday.org\/campaign\/rethink-hiv\">&#8216;Think Positive: Rethink HIV&#8217;<\/a>. The theme\u00a0was marked in London on Tuesday with a kissing booth in Soho Square between 1-3 pm, in an attempt to convey the message &#8216;Kissing Doesn&#8217;t Spread HIV. Ignorance Does&#8217;. Part of NASA&#8217;s New Frontiers program, it was designed\u00a0to study the Pluto system and the Kuiper belt, but to this end journeyed first towards Jupiter, making its closest approach to the planet on 29 February 2007. The probe flew by Jupiter at a distance of 2.3 million kilometres, returning data about the planet&#8217;s atmosphere, magnetosphere, and moons.<\/p>\n<p>After a long period of hibernation, on 6 December 2014, New Horizons was brought online once again for the visit to Pluto, beginning its approach on 15 January. In some of the best views of the planet we may be afforded for decades to come, they allow us to see craters, mountains, and glacial terrains to the northwest of the plain known as Sputnik Planum, over its\u00a0shoreline and across the al-Idrisi mountains.<\/p>\n<p>John Grunsfeld, the associate administrator for NASA&#8217;s Science Mission Directorate, said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8216;These close-up images, showing the diversity of terrain on Pluto, demonstrate the power of our robotic planetary explorers to return intriguing data to scientists back here on planet Earth. New Horizons thrilled us during the July flyby with the first close images of Pluto, and as the spacecraft transmits the treasure trove of images in its onboard memory back to us, we continue to be amazed by what we see.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">More images are expected from New Horizons over the coming weeks and months. The probe stored a vast amount of data in its onboard memory during the flyby, and will send information back to Earth slowly via its transmitter until\u00a0late 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The photographs\u00a0were taken by a combination of the telescopic Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) and the Ralph\/Multispectral Visual Imaging Camera (MVC), which provides colour in blue, red, and infrared at a lower resolution. New Horizons Principal Investigator Alan Stern, of the Southwest Research Institute in Boulder, Colorado, noted:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>&#8216;These new images give us a breathtaking, super-high resolution window into Pluto\u2019s geology. Nothing of this quality was available for Venus or Mars until decades after their first flybys; yet at Pluto we\u2019re there already &#8211; down among the craters, mountains and ice fields &#8211; less than five months after flyby! The science we can do with these images is simply unbelievable.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"B0xkupKwjfM\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"New Horizons\u2019 Best View of Pluto\u2019s Craters, Mountains and Icy Plains\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/B0xkupKwjfM?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* * *<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Zlatan Breaks\u00a0Paris Saint-Germain&#8217;s League Goalscoring Record<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During\u00a0the evening fixture on Friday,\u00a0Zlatan Ibrahimovic became Paris Saint-Germain&#8217;s leading scorer in Ligue 1 history, as the league leaders achieved\u00a0a 0-3 victory away at Nice.<\/p>\n<p>Edinson Cavani opened the scoring on 35 minutes courtesy of an Ibrahimovic cross, and the Swedish striker doubled his side&#8217;s lead when he converted a penalty just before half-time &#8211; having been pulled\u00a0down by Niklas Hult, who was sent off for his trouble. Ibrahimovic completed the win just after the hour mark, with a low right-footed effort going in at the near post.<\/p>\n<p>Ibrahimovic&#8217;s two goals put him on 87 in total in Ligue 1 for Paris Saint-Germain, the club he joined in 2012 and has led to three successive league titles. He therefore surpassed the record of 85 previously held by Mustapha Dahleb, set by the Algerian international between 1974 and 1984.<\/p>\n<p>The victory over Nice put PSG a commanding 16 points clear at the top of Ligue 1. They are unbeaten in 17 league games this season, and last fell to a defeat in the league on 15 March.
