Music in the time of coronavirus means the cancellation of tours, shows, and launch parties, but sweet sounds still stream out at a steady pace. This week brought sublime new albums by JFDR, Dogleg, and Four Tet, an addendum to Eternal Atake in the form of Lil Uzi Vert vs. the World 2, and the debut full-length by Jay Electronica almost thirteen years after his experimental breakthrough. Jadakiss partners up with Pusha T as they aim to take more than potshots at their rivals, and Teyana Taylor’s luxe Afrocentric video for ‘We Got Love’ features a spoken-word interlude courtesy of Ms. Lauryn Hill. Megan Thee Stallion rides the curve on the swashbucklingly lascivious ‘Captain Hook’, Babyface Ray settles in for the long haul, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith stretches the body electric, and Sufjan Stevens and his stepfather Lowell Brams ascend towards the New Age summit on ‘Climb That Mountain’, the third track from the forthcoming Aporia, while Yves Tumor, Nicolas Jaar, DJ Python, Zsela, and Yaeji also get up early to lay the heady groundwork.
