On ‘Fur & Feather’, the Australian-born Brighton-based Penelope Trappes dwells in a soundscape of dream pop and dense forestry, drawing from Celtic mythology to find her center even in the act of shedding her own skin. The pianist James Francies pays tribute to his hometown of Houston on his second album for Blue Note. And Sharon Van Etten celebrates ten years of Epic with a concert performance and double album, incorporating track-by-track covers from artists as diverse as Lucinda Williams, Shamir, and Big Red Machine. The climax of the set comes courtesy of Fiona Apple, who meditates on self-love and subsistence through her cover of ‘Love More’.
CupcakKe moshes out and puts prospective partners through the ringer, Jane Birkin excuses her lover from an evening of slumber, and Tirzah shares a snapshot of burgeoning motherhood and strained recovery from the time a couple of years back when she embarked on her first live tour. Young Thug shines the spotlight on YSL Records in the company of Gunna, with an all-star supporting cast from Drake and Future to Rowdy Rebel and Coi Leray. There are new albums from The Armed, BROCKHAMPTON, and Vijay Iyer, the Beijing producer Howie Lee transports us all to Birdy Island, and tracks by María Isabel, Paris Texas, and Esperanza Spalding round out the best of the week.
